In an attempt to “develop youngsters writing skills and fire their imagination”, the staff at Southway Junior School in Burgess Hill, West Sussex decided to give their students a treat.  A treat known as a staged alien crash! Appearntly things where well thought out, and even the local police force pitched in to make the alien crash and subsequent abduction of a member of the school’s staff more believable to the students.  There was just on “minor” overlook on who was informed about it earlier the student’s parents.  It seems that some of the children found the production to be a little too believable and were troubled by the abduction:

Youngsters had to be reassured that the abducted member of staff was safe and well after he was carted off by the aliens.

Police contributed to the invasion by providing sirens and flashing blue lights to signify the landing of the craft just before morning classes on July 10.

Diana Goss, the headteacher, informed pupils that an alien craft had crashed near the school and pupils were encouraged to “follow a trail of debris” before stumbling across the UFO.

A member of staff was then abducted by aliens before the children were sent back to class.

[A] parent said: “By all accounts it sounds like something out of that film Mars Attacks or War of the Worlds. I don’t know what the school was thinking.”

I’m glad that at least one parent seemed to get what the school was doing, but maybe I have to agree with a parent who said, “…to shock children into thinking that the aliens have landed and have abducted a teacher is just a little too much for seven-year-olds.” but even so I can’t help but envy those kids.  Give them a few years more, like until they were 9 or 10 and that would have become the coolest thing that ever happened to them!
